Jesus teach us to pray July 25, 2010

Posted July 25th, 2010

Jesus' disciples saw Him praying and asked Jesus to teach them to pray. As true disciples they wanted to know to pray effectively to God. Thoughout our lives too we have either learned from someone or have taught someone how to pray. Jesus opened the door for us to go to God the Father for all our needs. In the prayer Jesus taught His disciples are all the principles of our temporal life... our needs, our spiritual life, and our moral being.

Our lives are filled with busyness and that busyness can detract from our time with our Lord and Savior Jesus. Martha seemed to filled with busyness until Jesus helped her see what was important. Did Martha continue with her busyness or did she too sit at Jesus' feet? That is a question we too seek to answer - do we too continue in our busyness - or do we take time and sit with Jesus so we can learn.

The story of the Good Samaritan is more than about doing good for someone. It goes beyond ourselves and our culture. We like the person on the side of the road are wounded and dying and it is Jesus who comes along and risked everything to save us. We who are called to be in His imagine can like Jesus can reach out to those who are lost and dying. We too can share God's love, grace, and mercy through His Son Jesus with a lost and dying world. Thus the question becomes more than "Who is my neighbor" it is "To whom can I be a neighbor."

When there is an important task to be accomplished we all like to be selected to be involved in that task. For us it is important because we feel we can make a difference in someone's life. Last week our Gospel was about three people who came to Jesus with a desire to follow Jesus but only when convenient... this week we sense the urgency of being appointed by Jesus to go ahead of Him to announce His coming to that village or town... It is an important task because it is a one time offering. It is no different today...

Most of us had or have someone we'd like to be like. To be like someone or to emulate them means being committed to learn from them. It requires becoming their disciple. Most of us probably never thought about being like Peter, James, John, or one of the other disciples. Jesus reminds us the cost of discipleship is more than we think. And because of the cost we hesitate. But it is the only way to truly follow Him...

Luke again reveals who Jesus is and about His grace towards us in Luke 7:36-50. He reminds us that no one is without the need of God's grace and that we can receive it through Jesus. It is only when we recognize our need and see the areas of our lives that separate us from God and bring them to Him that we can be reconciled. And when we do we will be overwhelmed by the magnificance of His Love for us...

When we look in the rearview mirror of life and think about the "good old days" and how wonder they were. As we look back we sometimes reflect on the difficulties and adversities and how we made it through them...the question is do we attribute how we make it through on our own accord, through a "stroke of luck" or do we see with 20/20 eyesight God hand of compassion and restoration in the situation. God compassion will lead to restoration when we place our trust in Him.

Jesus said in John 16:7 " ... it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you." It is the Holy Spirit who leads to recognize who we really are ... When we recognize our position before God, He can use us and asks us the question "Who can I send..." Would you answer be the same as Isaiah answered "Here I am Lord, Send Me!!!"

Pentecost, the Feast of Shavuot, celebrated 50 days after the Passover with the reaping of the barley harvest and the beginning of the wheat harvest. A day of anticipation of what God provided and what God would provide. A celebration commanded by God from the Passover to the giving of the Ten Commandment on Mt. Sinai to Moses. God revealed Himself and reveals Himself. It is the day God empowers the Church and empowers us to go to preach the Good News of Salvation through the work of Jesus Christ on the Cross...

Jesus prayed for His disciple and then He prayed for those who would come to believe in Him through their words. Over 2000 years ago Jesus was praying for us... those who would come to believe in Him through their [the apostle's] words. In this prayer in John 17 Jesus also prayed for their sanctification and protection, to be set apart and to be protected from the evil one. They would need this if they were going to remain as one with Him and through Him to God the Father...
