Self Promoting or Denying Self

Posted September 24th, 2012

Our society focuses on promotions and self-promotion. We measure success based on our position and promotions within our society. The disciples weren't any different. Shortly after the disciples had confessed that Jesus was the Messiah they failed to understand He was going to be a different Messiah than they had expected. They continued to view Him as the reigning Messiah of Israel who would have "cabinet" members who would help Him rule. During their walk the were discussing detail their positions. Jesus again turns that upside down.

Who do you say I am?

Posted September 19th, 2012

We all have turning points in our lives. They are times when something happens that we cannot forget and changes our lives. It can be as simple as leaving home to take a new job in different part of the country or world or it can be complicated. For the disciples this was a turning point for them. It happened when Jesus asked the question "Who do you say I am?" Jesus had already asked them who others thought He was, now He asked them. When they revealed their answer, Jesus told them plainly what was going to happen.

Jesus doesn't reject those our needs

Posted September 10th, 2012

Our faith gives us hope and our hope is encouraged by faith. There are two miracle accounts of healing in the Gospel lection for today – but not just of healing but of faith and God's demonstrating His love for the world. It is faith that is not deterred by a situation. It is faith that Jesus the Son of God is the true and living Son of God and that God looks on all who come humbly before Him.

Tradition, Tradition - leading to Jesus or to man

Posted September 2nd, 2012

There is something about traditions that make us feel good. It gives us a sense of security and stability. Everyone has some kind of tradition and isn't it true that we all want to share those traditions with other. In my family we have lasagna on Christmas, another family I know has hot dogs. There is a tradition at the beginning of the baseball season that someone throw out the first pitch of the game.

A critical life changing decision John 6:59

Posted August 27th, 2012

Every day we make decisions. Some of our decisions are routine; what we will have for breakfast, clothes shopping, etc. Other decisions are more complex; buying a car, a new major appliance, where to go on vacation - my favorite- should I buy a new 2013 Harley Ultra-Classic or the keep the one I have. Then there are critical decision which are life changing. All these are earthly decisions. The critical decision is whether we trust God and believe in Jesus as Savior. That is not just a spiritual decision but an eternal decision.

No debate - it's fact 12th Pent. Jn. 6:51

Posted August 19th, 2012

We can many things to debate about. We can debate whether one car is better than another. We can debate on types of food. We can debate on when the best time is to go on vacation, or go fishing, or when to by something. We debate on information we have been given and we hold as facts known at the time. Jesus was in the synagogue when the murmuring turned to disputing what Jesus was telling them about being the bread of life. The turning point for them was when Jesus said you have to eat my flesh and drink my blood to have eternal life.

11th Sunday after the Pentecost - Listening when enough seems enough

Posted August 13th, 2012

Listening with an open mind is one of the hardest things we do...Jesus was telling the crowd that followed Him He is the Bread of Life. If the people had listened they would have understood. When we listen to the Lord he tells us what He wants us to do. To listen to Him however we need the Holy Spirit and that only comes through knowing Jesus as Lord and Savior.

Feeding the 5000 - looking beyond the natural

Posted July 29th, 2012

The crowds were on the way to celebrate the Passover in Jerusalem. They saw Jesus and the disciples and went after them. Jesus asked the disciples how they would feed the crowd and the disciples only saw the natural not the supernatural. When Jesus told them what to do they had to trust and believe in Him...not the natural...Do we have that kind of faith to trust in Jesus? When we face obstacles do we look at the natural or trust in Jesus to do more exceedingly and abundantly than we ever thought possible....

Celebrating 5 years

Posted July 22nd, 2012

Today was a celebration of five years of ministry at St. Elizabeth's. And it was day to remember because not only was it a celebration of ministry but also welcoming two children into the family of God through baptism. Jesus' disciples were amazed at what they did when they embarked on the mission to the village under Jesus' authority. Today we embark on ministry to the world under the same authority.

God's love knows no bounds

Posted July 2nd, 2012

There is a phrase - In desperate times people take desperate measures. We try to seek remedies for the situations we are facing. Jairus and the woman with the issue of blood were two people were desperate. One was well-educated, wealthy, a man of influence and reputation and the other was an outcast. Jesus does not dismiss one over the other. He reveals His power and His love to both. In doing so He reveals God's kingdom invading the the earth and the foretelling promise of the power of the resurrection.
